Biodegradability of Polymers in Home Compost

Most fruit label stickers are unable to break down in compost. Through previous
Cal Poly research, Sinclair Systems has established that their compostable labels break down under temperature and moisture controlled municipal compost conditions. This project aims to analyze how these labels, alongside Sinclair’s polyethylene and paper
labels, behave under average, uncontrolled home compost conditions. It also seeks to determine whether the compostable labels are truly undergoing biodegradation (as opposed to physical disintegration) by measuring carbon dioxide evolution.
