An Experimental Study of Racial Discrimination in Housing Perceptions

Previous research has demonstrated that Black homeowners are continuously discriminated against at every stage of the home buying and selling process in ways that compound over time (Korver-Glenn, 2018). This research experimentally examines this phenomenon by looking at differences in ratings of home quality and appraisal ratings between a home that is Black-owned versus a home that is White-owned. Homeownership is a primary means of building generational wealth, and our findings allow us to look at not only what attitudes and prejudices potential homeowners hold, but how these prejudices result in the devaluing of a home owned by a Black person.
